About the Georgia Shrimp Association

The Georgia Shrimp Association (GSA) serves its members by proactively addressing regulatory, environmental, educational, marketing and related issues that impact the shrimp trawling industry. Shrimping in Georgia is an integral part of Georgia’s history and economy – fisheries throughout Georgia directly and indirectly affect over 40,000 jobs in this state. The pressure from inexpensive foreign imports, more stringent “catch and processing” laws, tougher environmental standards and escalating operating cost have forced many shrimpers and dock owners to re-evaluate their business. We understand that marketing is now a major issue in the recovery of our industry. This is why the Georgia Shrimp Association is launching the Certified Georgia Shrimp Program, which will promote the unsurpassed taste and quality of sweet Georgia shrimp.
Georgia shrimpers have developed and assisted with testing of turtle excluder devices (TED’s) and bycatch reduction devices (BRD’s) and they continue to be improved by the capable experience of the people who understand the trawling industry best- shrimpers. Georgia Shrimp Association members now serve on boards of several of several environmental groups, water quality groups and fishery management councils. We promote a sustainable fishery while preserving the unique way of life in coastal Georgia.

The Georgia Shrimp Association is also fortunate to maintain a strong partnership with other shrimp organizations through the Southern Shrimp Alliance and with academic and scientific communities through UGA Marex and Georgia Southern University. The 21st century presents many challenges and opportunities to the shrimp industry. The basic precept of Georgia shrimpers remain the same; produce a high quality product at a reasonable price.
